Sustainable Venture Creation: a course dedicated to finding entrepreneurial solutions to the SDGs

Ambitious.Africa partners with Hanken School of Economics, Wärtsilä, UNDP, and Hanken ES for a course called Sustainable Venture Creation.

It is a 5-ECTS course held at Hanken School of Economics from the 2nd of November until the 15th of December. Its purpose is to mobilize the most powerful resource on the planet, the next generation, to solve the most pressing issues of today and tomorrow.

Moreover, the big picture objective of this endeavor is to have the course included in the curricula of different African and Nordic universities starting from next year.

Background:

The world is experiencing major global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and striving for global peace and justice. This is why the United Nations has defined Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to combat these problems.

The SDGs consist of 17 ambitious goals that the world hopes to achieve before 2030. Unfortunately, we are not on track to achieve them. But we believe that entrepreneurship will be a key catalyst for transforming our world and overcoming the diverse nature of these global challenges.

“The depth of the issues that the Sustainable Development Goals are seeking to achieve need the most catalytic and innovative engagements, these are represented by the determination and vision of social enterprises.”

- Jenna Nicholas, CEO at Impact Experience

The seven-week course builds on students' burning desire to drive positive change. It is built to innovate new entrepreneurial solutions and drive positive change wherever they feel that it is most needed.

Sustainable Business Ventures: A course built by students, for students:

It is a unique collaboration between the student union, the faculty of Hanken, and external partners. “By students, for students” is the way the course is developed. The faculty is in charge of the academic and examinational parts of the course, whereas the student union takes care of the hackathon, accelerator program, and the SDG days.

Big picture:

Sustainable Venture Creation is developed in a way that enables other universities to easily integrate it into their curricula and adapt it in collaboration with their respective student unions.

The faculty is onboarded by professors that already have run the course and the student union by their respective peers. The Idea2Market program is developed with a clear step-by-step manual for facilitating the program.

The course will be piloted in a variety of African universities in 2022, through our partnership with Wärtsilä.
